Help shape the future of safer communities

CoSA Ottawa is looking for committed community members who want to contribute their skills, experience and perspective to our mission.

Serving on the Board of Directors is an opportunity to help provide leadership, oversight and strategic direction to an organization working toward No More Victims.

Whether your background is in finance, fundraising, governance, communications, law, human resources, community engagement or another area, your expertise can help strengthen CoSA Ottawa and support its future.

What does a Board member do?

Board members work together to provide governance and strategic leadership for CoSA Ottawa. The Board is responsible for helping ensure that the organization is well governed, financially sustainable and able to fulfill its mission.

Directors contribute by:

  • Providing strategic direction and oversight;
  • Supporting the organization’s financial sustainability;
  • Helping build community awareness and engagement;
  • Contributing skills, knowledge and professional expertise;
  • Supporting fundraising and resource development;
  • Providing oversight of organizational policies, risk and accountability; and
  • Helping ensure CoSA Ottawa remains focused on its mission and the needs of the community.

Board members are not expected to do everything themselves. Effective governance means working collectively, asking good questions, providing oversight and supporting the Program Director and staff in carrying out the organization’s strategy.

Who can serve on the Board?

All members of the CoSA Ottawa Board of Directors must be members of CoSA Ottawa.

Board candidates should:

  • Support the mission and principles of CoSA Ottawa;
  • Be willing to contribute their time, knowledge and perspective;
  • Work collaboratively with fellow Board members;
  • Act in the best interests of CoSA Ottawa; and
  • Be committed to helping build a stronger and more sustainable organization.

We welcome individuals with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.

How are Directors Selected?

Directors are nominated by themselves or by other CoSA Ottawa members and are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

In accordance with the CoSA Ottawa By-Law, a member may also be appointed to the Board between AGMs to fill a vacancy or when there is a need for specific expertise. An appointment must be ratified by the membership at the next AGM.

Directors serve two-year terms, which may be renewed up to two times, for a maximum of six consecutive years.

Nominations are welcome year-round.

To nominate yourself or another CoSA Ottawa member for the Board of Directors, please contact: admin@cosa-ottawa.ca.

Unlike other platforms which typically charge a user fee in addition to transaction fees on every single transaction, Zeffy is 100% for the organisations that use our platform. Zeffy covers all credit card fees and does not charge a platform use fee. In return, Zeffy includes a suggested voluntary contribution to donors at the payment step. As it is a voluntary contribution, donors can choose a different amount from the suggested one by clicking "Other" and entering the amount of their choice, or they can enter "$0" if they do not wish to support our platform.

 Zeffy’s model is driven by the belief that all nonprofits should have access to 100% of the donations intended for their mission, therefore these contributions are Zeffy’s only source of revenue. They help to cover transaction fees, platform development and service costs. On a large scale, the voluntary contribution gives thousands of organizations access, for the first time, to a high-quality fundraising technology completely free of charge (normally the charge is a minimum of 4% per donation received). For the more than 10,000 organizations that work with Zeffy, this means a bigger budget and greater efficiency in fulfilling their mission to society.
